Overview

Picture yourself on a picturesque island, nestled in the Wouri department, in the charming fourth district of Douala. Jebale island, the first to be discovered by Germans in Cameroon, was the origin of the German name for the country: Rio dos Camaroes, which means “river of shrimps.” It is also home to a cannon dating back to the First World War, as well as the oldest school and church in all of Cameroon.

Embarking on this journey to explore this island is an experience filled with history. Wander through its alleys on an exciting hike and let yourself be enchanted by the atmosphere that pervades the place. It is advisable to venture barefoot, allowing your body to fully indulge in the delightful sensations it brings. Marvel at the sight of the sacred canoe, capable of carrying nearly 50 people, which emerges from its sanctuary only once a year during the grand Sawa festival (Ngondo) for a thrilling race.
