Located in the heart of Douala-Edea National Park, the Pongo Songo Chimpanzee Sanctuary is one of Cameroon’s most remarkable ecotourism destinations. This unique conservation site allows visitors to admire rehabilitated chimpanzees roaming freely on protected islands — a heartwarming experience surrounded by nature and purpose.
The visit includes a guided boat tour around the sanctuary, offering an up-close view of the chimpanzees in their natural habitat. While direct contact with the primates is no longer allowed for safety, security, and health reasons, this respectful distance ensures their wellbeing and protection.
This activity grants access exclusively to the chimpanzee reserve and the boat tour. It does not include a car rental which is necesary for reaching the canoe deck at the mariemberg church. For the visit, you will be accompanied by a certified guide. You’ll be required to reserve a spot in your vehicle for the guide, who can join your group from Edea. Upon request, a guide from Kribi or Douala can also be arranged to accompany you throughout the experience.

Many respect to the work of the Guides! These guys deserve all our support! Without them this Breathtaking experience would not have been possible. The chimpanzees are our closest relatives and in Great danger of extention!
Also the Sanaga river is to be mentioned, stunning!
We would have liked a little bit more information from the guides, preferably after the boat trip and the visit to the chimpanzees. During the visit, you are too fascinated by the chimpanzees to absorb any information.

The tour was very good. We ended up using around three hours from Kribi to Marienberg. We got picked up at 10 am, so a little late, but we were prepared for that, so the information from YENGAFRICA that we will just wait at the deck is very useful. Thank you for the great planning.
