Overview

This daily excursion invites visitors to escape the urban landscape and explore Manoka Island by motorboat. The island’s main attraction is the German Manoka Prison, a historic site linked to Rudolph Duala Manga Bell, a Cameroonian nationalist who was imprisoned there.

On the way, visitors will walk through the mangroves, experiencing this unique ecosystem up close. The journey reveals an important piece of Cameroon’s history, with remnants of the nationalist struggle still visible on the island.

Once in Manoka, stroll along narrow village paths, passing traditional fishermen’s huts. Enjoy time on the beach, where you can relax with your feet in the water. Before returning to Douala, savor a delicious meal at the Manoka port, featuring fresh local flavors.

This nature-filled adventure combines history, culture, and relaxation, making it a must-do experience.

What you should expect

Gathering at the port of Youpwé

The starting point of this program is on the outskirts of Bonapriso below the monument of the fiftieth anniversary of the Cameroonian army. The guide will wait for the visitors at the Catholic church of youpwé in order to get to the small port.

Walk to discover the prison of Manoka

Upon our arrival on the island of Manoka, we leave for a bucolic walk on the tracks of this region. This 4km walk will bring the visitors closer to the locals, especially the fishermen and the children. On the way we will stop to discover and admire the remains of the infamous German prison which was used to imprison community leaders in order to reduce their influence on the population. The most famous of these prisoners was Rudolph Duala Manga Bell. After the discovery of this historical relic, it's time for a swim.

Local meal

Back at the landing stage, we head to the restaurant to taste the fish broth prepared by a local chef. At the end of the lunch, we will return to the port of Youpwé in Douala. Visitors could discover the mangroves in this part of the wildlife reserve as we ride on the motorized boat.

It is an escape in the meanders of this green setting of fresh water of the Gulf of Guinea. The visitors will be able to delight to observe the structuring of the mangroves before joining a piece of sea which will lead us towards the landing stage of Manoka.

This activity will not only allow us to stretch our legs, but it will also allow us to get closer to the local populations who have fishing as their main activity. It should be noted that this walk is educational and cultural because it will lead us to the discovery of the remains of the German prison of Manoka.

This activity of meeting and historical dialogue will make it possible to revive a strong moment of the history of the fight for independence of the local communities. The guide will make a presentation on the most famous prisoner of this relic: King Rudolph Duala Manga Bell

At the end of the discovery and learning activities, we taste our fish broth, accompanied by tubers.
