What if your next team-building session had no meeting room, no presentation and no one asking you to explain your strengths?

Team building in Cameroon can take the form of a shared journey: discovering a place, listening to its history and enjoying time with colleagues outside the usual work routine.

That was the approach behind a trip organised by YENGAFRICA for a group from the Port Autonome de Douala—the Port Authority of Douala. Our destination was Kribi. But beyond the coastal scenery, the day offered something worth making time for: opportunities to connect through culture, memory and conversation.

When Colleagues Need Time to Simply Connect

At work, conversations often have a purpose: solve a problem, meet a deadline or coordinate a task. There is not always much space to get to know the person behind the role.

Workshops and structured exercises have their place. However, a company outing offers another way to bring people together. A shared discovery gives colleagues something new to talk about, without asking them to perform or produce a result.

For companies considering team building in Douala, a trip beyond the city can create that change of pace. The question is what to build into the journey.

For this group, the answer began with Batanga history.

From Douala to Kribi: A Journey Into Memory

Our team building in Kribi included a visit to the Batanga Memorial, a place that invited the group to pause and engage with local memory.

A cultural outing brings a different kind of attention. Colleagues listen together, discover unfamiliar stories and share questions that might never arise in the office.

The journey continued to Bongahélé, where the group was welcomed by His Majesty Chief Lobé. Here, the story of King Madola, an important figure in Batanga history, became part of the experience.

Meeting the people who carry this history gave the visit a personal dimension. Participants could hear, ask and exchange directly with their hosts.

A Welcome That Opened Up Conversation

The community participated in the welcome through the Bolo bo Ntindi ritual parade, bringing a living cultural expression into the encounter.

The group also spoke with Chief Lobé about tourism and the efforts involved in maintaining the memory of local kings. These exchanges gave participants an opportunity to consider the destination through the eyes of those who preserve and share its heritage.

This is one of the possibilities offered by corporate outings in Cameroon: colleagues can discover their country while engaging with people whose experiences differ from their own.

Company-funded visits can also create paid opportunities for local hosts and cultural participants. When organized respectfully, they can help give visibility to histories and traditions that deserve an audience.

Safety Shapes the Experience, Too

The day finished with lunch opposite the Lobé Falls, giving the group time to sit together and continue their conversations.

However, we did not take the group onto the water. The trip took place towards the end of the rainy season, and water levels remained high. For safety reasons, we kept the experience on land.

A well-organised outing requires that kind of judgment. At YENGAFRICA, conditions on the day help determine what can safely go ahead. Adapting an activity is part of looking after the group.

What Could Your Team Share Beyond the Office?

The value of this trip came from a combination of moments: discovering the Batanga Memorial, meeting Chief Lobé, learning about King Madola, experiencing the community’s welcome and sharing a meal.

Each offered a different opening for conversation.

Team building in Cameroon does not always need a packed schedule or a series of challenges. Sometimes, it needs a thoughtful programme that gives people room to discover, ask questions and enjoy being together.

For your next company outing, consider what your colleagues could share beyond their usual working day.
