The Place de l’Indépendance sits right next to the Hôtel de Ville de Yaoundé (City Hall), making it both symbolic and easy to reach. Its central location allows visitors to combine their stop here with other must-see attractions in Yaoundé.

Nearby, you can explore the the National Museum of Cameroon, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the Reunification Monument, or lesser-known gems like the monastery museum (13 minutes away) or the Ethnographic Museum of the Peoples of the Forest in Elig Essono.

At the center of the square rises a striking 25-meter white obelisk, built in a conical shape on a polygonal base. Engraved on its foundation are the coat of arms of Cameroon, the national flag, and the date 1960.

By day, the monument speaks to the solemnity of independence. By night, it once held a glowing torch symbolizing the flame of freedom. That glow has since faded, and the square is now lit by the adjacent CNPS building, a landmark designed by French architect Armand Salomon.
